How to Host a Plantacular Succulent Garden Party

The 80’s party is so 2003. How To Host A Murder really only worked that one time, because you were in high school and in drama class. Bunko is kind of annoying and is anyone really still watching The Bachelor? Enter the Succulent Garden Party.

This is a perfect get-together for the Pinterest age! Be the first of your friends to host a Plantacular party! To make it happen you’ll purchase a bunch of small and varied succulent plants (they’re cheap — or ask guests to bring plants of their choosing) as well as a variety of small pots, soil and pebbles.

Steps

1. Decide to Par-tay: Invite 6-10 friends for a Pinterest-worthy garden party gathering
2. Garden Party Prep: You will need to collect supplies for each guest including a small pot (8″ in diameter and a minimum of 4″ deep is an appropriate size) with a drainage hole, potting soil, and 50-75 small succulent plants from your local nursery or garden center. Or ask guests to BYOC (Bring Your Own Container) or BYOS (Bring Your Own Succulents) but be sure to be specific so everyone ends up with the right thing.
3. Day-of Prep: Set out a large pot full of potting soil for everyone to share. And display the succulent plants — featuring as many different varieties as possible. You should also try to use mason jars in one way or another, because that is what Pinterest would want you to do.
4. Game Time: Instruct guests on the basics of planting succulents, pour generous glasses of wine and let the creativity begin!
5. Variety Matters: Choose 5-7 succulents of different shapes and sizes.
6. Beautify Your Container: Get creative! Succulents are beautiful and interesting, plan your arrangement however you see fit. You might want to try planting the tallest succulent in the middle of your pot.
7. Finishing Touches: When you are finished planting your succulents, add pebbles to the top of the soil for a decorative flair and to help keep the soil from escaping the pot. Refill wine glasses.
8. Talk Amongst Yourselves: No explanation necessary. The wine will help.
9. Parting Words: In addition to their custom creations, be sure to send guests home with instructions about how to maintain their new succulent garden. A couple simple tips include:
   • Succulents don’t like over-watering. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings but water often enough to keep the leaves plump and fleshy.
   • Good drainage is essential!
